A Surge in Battery Storage Projects in Germany: What the 2024 Data Reveals?

In 2024, grid operators in Germany received a total of 9,710 applications for connecting battery energy storage systems to medium- and high-voltage grids. This figure does not include storage facilities intended for residential use. The submitted applications cover projects with a planned total power capacity of around 400 GW and a storage capacity of approximately 661 GWh.

According to a report by the German energy regulator Bundesnetzagentur, there are currently 921 operational battery energy storage facilities connected at the medium- and high-voltage levels, with a net nominal power capacity of around 2.3 GW and a storage capacity of approximately 3.2 GWh.

In 2024, grid operators approved around 3,800 applications from 2024 and previous years for connecting battery storage systems with a total capacity of around 25 GW and a storage capacity of approximately 46 GWh. However, since connection approvals are binding only for the grid operators, it is not certain that all projects will actually be implemented by the investors.

Detailed information on approved connections and applications currently under review — broken down by transmission system operators and distribution system operators — can be found here.
