By 2030 over half of European power generation capacity, and 70% of new solar and wind sources, will be decentralised and connected at distribution grid level. Meanwhile, demand is expected to reach 3.530 Twh as the total number of EVs in Europe reaches 50-70 million. To guarantee supply and cost-effectiveness, DSOs are moving towards an increasingly decentralised and digitalised management of the grid where procurement of flexibility services via a market-based approach will be an effective tool to improve resilience and a sustainable alternative to costly infrastructure upgrades. An increasing number of flexibility platforms are being developed across Europe and an efficient and transparent set of market design rules is crucial to get these solutions up and running and to position Europe as a front runner in the global green economy.
