Welcome to Berlin
Join us for two days of lively debate on how the digitally empowered customer is fuelling rapid change in the energy market, in turn sparking new opportunities for utilities and customers alike.
Utility customers, once seen as a monolithic group of like-minded consumers, are becoming ever more active and demanding. There is a new form of energy consumerism – and with it a new wave of innovation that is sweeping change in the evolving power market. Megatrends such as sustainability – with social and technological trends driving green energy, alongside the economics that make this change competitive – and the rise of the individual and concerns over affordability, have all put the customer into sharper focus. Power companies are responding open-mindedly and swiftly to this trend and a range of products and personalised services are being offered to the digitally empowered – and increasingly demanding – energy customer.
But for more customers to get engaged – and for the “consumer powered energy transition” to get off the ground – full support is required on all fronts. This means that changes must be explained to domestic and commercial and industrial customers so that they understand why they are necessary, what impact they will have, how much they will cost and, above all, how to gain from them. Politicians, regulators, consumer groups and the energy industry each have a role to play in this process.
EURELECTRIC’s annual conference in Berlin will gather representatives from across these groups to discuss the challenges, opportunities and complexities of shaping and nurturing the transition to a customer-centric energy market. Four focused sessions over the two days will examine distinct themes as follows:
Session 1: Global trends and visions for the European power sector
The “architecture” of energy systems globally and in Europe is undergoing significant change. As new players enter the market and customers start to generate their own power, the pressure and challenge to develop and transform the energy system is immense. Amidst the increasing penetration of decentralised generation, the emergence of smarter grids, energy efficiency offerings and demand response programmes, the power industry itself must continually innovate to meet the evolving needs of the customer. The global economic and technological trends and their impact on the energy sector are contrasted with the situation in Europe, focusing on the long-term vision and implications for the European power sector.
Session 2: Embracing change: a customer-led future
Taking stock of the global downstream trends across geographies and industries, as highlighted in the previous session, this session will deep dive into the issue of how these global trends are impacting on the energy world, both in terms of domestic and commercial and industrial customers. How are customers’ needs evolving? Will the advent of more active customers and prosumers turn the market upside down? What will the next generation customers look like? Are power companies able to keep pace with customers and tailor their offers?
Session 3: The energy world of tomorrow: smart, innovative and competitive
The vast increase in consumer power brought on by the digital era and the symbiotic evolution of technology is challenging the traditional utility head-on, creating a host of opportunities for customers and utilities alike. The energy world of tomorrow must be smart, innovative and competitive, but what impact will this have on elements of the value chain? What does this mean for DSOs, for retailers, for ICT, for customers? What changes are required in terms of business model innovation? Do we need to break with traditional roles? Conclusions and recommendations of EURELECTRIC’s downstream work on these topics will also input into the content of this session.
Session 4: Powering Europe ahead
A sharp and challenging Q&A session with leading industry CEOs, think tanks, politicians, regulators and consumers, this session will focus on the energy system of the future. It will debate some of the main conclusions/recommendations of previous sessions and kick off with an introductory presentation on the intricacies and complexities of sustainable energy supply in a customer centric world.
The EURELECTRIC Conference is hosted by BDEW, the German member organisation of our industry association. It is kindly sponsored by Accenture, as Gold Sponsor, Pöyry, as Silver Sponsor and Ormazabal, as Bronze sponsor. Other supporting organisations include: FTI-CL Energy, IHS Global, Opower and PwC. As in previous years, the EURELECTRIC industry and student awards will be given prominent place in the programme. A small exhibition will also be organised on the sidelines of the event in addition to a number of social networking events.
