GROWTH IN COAL, NATURAL GAS, SOLAR AND WIND ELECTRICITY GENERATION IN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF 2019

GROWTH IN COAL, NATURAL GAS, SOLAR AND WIND ELECTRICITY GENERATION IN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF 2019

Net electricity generation in March 2019 was 3806 GWh or a drop of 5% compared to the same period of 2018, as indicated by ENTSOE data.

No significant alterations in nuclear and coal electricity generation were observed, growing respectively by 0.5% and 1%.

Wind electricity generation went up by 7% and solar – by 84% compared to March 2018.

Considerable decrease was observed in hydro-power generation, being 313 GWh less than a year ago.

In contrast to the first months of 2019, in March electricity import amounted to 275 GWh which was twice higher that in March 2018. The predominant quantity imported was via the Romanian border.

Electricity export reached 896 GWh or 26% more than in March 2018. The largest quantity was exported to Greece, followed by Turkey with some 254 GWh and North Macedonia – 239 GWh. Serbia and Romania received from Bulgaria 14% and 2%, respectively, of the total electricity export.

March net exchange of electricity was 621 GWh or 8% more than in 2018.

National consumption was 2892 GWh or 9% less that March 2018.

First quarter of 2019 marked a 4% increase in net electricity generation compared to same period of 2018, reaching 11570 GWh.

Lignite share in electricity generation increased by 14% compared to 2018 as a result of the increased output in January and February 2019.

Natural gas electricity generation was 680 GWh or a growth of 25% compared to the first quarter of 2018.

Growth was observed also in solar and wind electricity generation in the first quarter of 2019, respectively, 14% and 9%.

A significant drop of 30% in hydro-power generation was observed within the surveyed period.

Electricity import was 732 GWh or 13% less than the first three months of 2018.

Electricity export was 2428 GWh in the first quarter of 2019 or 28% higher than export in the same period of 2018.

Electricity net exchange (import-export) amounted to 1696 GWh or 60% more than in the first quarter of 2018 as a result of increased export and decreased import.

National electrcity consumption was 9650 GWh in the first quarter of 2019 or close to 2% less than the one in the same period of 2018.
