Тhis morning in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her annual State of the Union (SOTEU) address before the European Parliament.
Among the highlights related to energy were:

Climate targets. The commitment was reaffirmed to implement the existing legislation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and to continue working towards the 2040 targets.

Electric vehicles. The speech underlined that the future lies in electric mobility, with Europe expected to play an active role and ensure that vehicles of the future are produced within Europe.

Single Market. A roadmap will be developed by 2028 covering capital markets, services, energy, telecommunications and other areas.

Energy costs. The need for greater domestic production of renewable energy sources was highlighted, supported by nuclear energy as a base-load option. Emphasis was placed on the urgency of modernization and investment, including through a European package for electricity grids and cross-border interconnections.

“Energy Highways” initiative. The Commission identified eight key bottlenecks in Europe’s energy infrastructure to be addressed through coordinated efforts by governments and utilities. Improved interconnections are expected to strengthen the functioning of the market and enhance supply security.
