New EU Rules on Battery Data Transparency for Electric Vehicles

New EU Rules on Battery Data Transparency for Electric Vehicles

The European Commission has published a document on battery data sharing, aligned with the new rules of the revised Renewable Energy Directive. The document aims to support EU Member States in implementing Article 20a, paragraph 3 of the Directive.

What is the purpose of the new rules?

The new requirements aim to ensure greater transparency and support the energy transition. They call for free real-time sharing of data from electric vehicle batteries with users and authorized third parties. This includes information such as:

  • state of charge;

  • health of the battery;

  • location of the vehicle.

The goal is for all EU countries to adopt a common approach to these requirements.

Why is data sharing important?

The main goal is to increase transparency and enable smarter use of batteries. This will support:

  • smart and bidirectional charging,

  • better integration with energy systems.

Access to the data should be provided wirelessly (Over-the-Air) via existing charging points or, when the vehicle is plugged in, through a cable or Wi-Fi connection.

What are the benefits for users?

The system will enable the creation of new services beneficial to electric vehicle owners, such as:

  • apps for smarter driving,

  • improved trip planning,

  • optimized charging,

  • more precise battery performance monitoring.

Context and next steps

This document builds on a series of guidelines and recommendations published by the European Commission in September 2024 and July 2025. These are part of the broader efforts to implement the revised Renewable Energy Directive.
