New platform launched to support grids

The two associations of European network operators, for distribution and transmission networks respectively, DSO Entity and ENTSO-E, recently presented the DSO/TSO Technopedia platform. This is a new initiative stemming from the European Commission’s EU Networks Action Plan published on 28 November 2023. This plan outlines a series of measures to accelerate the development of electricity infrastructure, assigning DSO Entity and ENTSO-E the role of supporting and stimulating the application of smart grids, higher efficiency and innovative technologies.

The DSO/TSO Technopedia aims to showcase existing technologies that support the deployment of smart grids, helping to improve network efficiency and strengthen security of supply across Europe.

The platform will include detailed descriptions of technologies available to system operators, as well as use cases and implementation examples from across the continent. This will allow system operators to study how others are using different technologies, share best practices and adopt similar solutions in their own networks. The platform is also open to contributions from stakeholders. They will be able to submit information on specific use cases, thereby helping to expand the collective knowledge base.

For the introduction of the system in 2025, DSO Entity and ENTSO-E have identified a set of key technologies that will be the initial areas of focus. All applications submitted will be assessed in accordance with clearly defined, transparent criteria set out in the accompanying guidance document.

The first application window for DSO/TSO Technopedia will be open until 30 June for all interested parties. The application template, guidelines and specific technologies covered by this first application window can be found on the platform.
